HISTORY OF EGYPT CRICKET TEAM



The game cricket first played in Egypt. in 19th century, but in 1851 cricket club was formed in Egypt in the place of Alexandria  with help of British residents . Before the opening of Suez Canal  Cricket was most popular recreational activities for the increase of British population.



            The Military started to play local game cricket   and established more cricket club in Egypt. A Shaw’s were toured to Australia  for an Ashes tour, they played a match with the combined  Army and Navy team in October 1884.

            The main sporting and social activity was Cricket of the British population in 1909 and standards of Marylebone Cricket Club was good enough for send a team to tour by 1909. For the first time a national side was raised , there three matches played by MCC team against them. The result was winning two matches and losing one match .Local clubs and representing the military and civilian population  team also played with them in addition to their matches .

            In March 1914 I Zingari team toured  in Egypt. The National team played there three matches with them and in addition Cairo and Alexandria Cricket also played against the tourist team. The result  of national side were two match drawn and another was lost A combined team (consisting) Egypt and Sudan played the MCC by the returned visit of sports  later in the year at lord’s in two day match . The team won the MCC by ten wickets.

            In 1927 the Free foresters toured to Egypt, and they played against national team twice. The result  were first match lost and the second match draw. Hubert Martineau one of the player of Free Foresters team he provide regular opposition for the Egypt on the tour in the forthcoming years.

            Between 1929 to 1939 every years Martineau took the team to Egypt. The tour typically played two match against the national team . They also played against other club and military team in addition to their match

            Egypt started to played matches against Martineau’s team regularly in 1930 , the standard of the cricket of the country began to decline, because military dominated on the cricket , player change  often, lack of consistency to leading . Often Ignore the local civilian player  only native Egyptian  were played in the team.

            During the Second World War  Martineau’s tourwas ceased , but in the country cricket was played continuously in the war period .The cricket was played for the recreational activities of dsthe troops in the country . After the war the national team did not play again.

            An Egyptian club were made to restart cricket In 1951 to touring England, and played MCC at Lord’s . All these player were selected  from the upper classes , they always supported the monarchy of the Egyptian, when abolished the monarchy than leading  a little support for the cricket  in 1953. The new government was not interest for the game and the cricket turn to decline  slowly , The school of Egypt stopped the teaching of Cricket . In 1954 a cricket match played Gezira  Sporting Club against Pakistan. Due to finished the match early so player of Pakistan visited there many historical place namely Pyramid and the Sphinx 



            They began to built the cricket ground and it was not complete until  last 1990s that the game recovered  resurgence among  the India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and British expatriate  communities. In 2001 the school of Egypt began to reintroduce with the cricket . A cricket match being played by a cricket league in Cairo by April 2008.and  they hoped that they will take in the North West African  Championship.
