HISTORY OF ENGLAND CRICKET ( THIRD PHASE)



THIRD PHASE


Embarked on a long stretch of dominance  by England. They played  seventeen Test matches between 1884 to 1890. 14 match won and only three matches lost. In the opening Adelaide Test Billy Barnes hit 134 of the five Test  in 1884-85 series , At Melbourne Johnny Briggs from Lancashire hit two hour tons in the second Test, where Australia formed a completely  new 11 different players. Wilfred Flowers took 5 for 46 and scored  56 in the third Test in Sydney. The fifth test at Melbourne England won by an innings, Arthur Shrewsbury scored 105*. 



          In the Oval Test of 1886 W G Grace made 170, the record of 164 by Arthur Shrewsbury beating the individual Test innings in the previous match on a e4vil; pitch at lords. Australia were bowled out for 68 and 149, England won by an innings on the third day , 12 for 104 taken by George Lohmann of surrey.

          In 1886-87 tour Australia in both match beat by Shrewsbury’s England , on the first day at Sydney  despite being bowled out for 45. Two team from England toured in Australia in1887-88, Melbourne CC sponsored to Shrewsbury’s team and Sydney Association sponsored to Lord Harris’s team. Two teams jointly formed One team for one Test match at Sydney, there England won the match. Lohmann’s 9 wickets and Bobby Peel’s 10. Due to poor pitch and bad light Australia scored just 42 and 82.

Australia won at Lords but defeat at the oval and Trafford in 1888. Particularly Jack Ferris  and the ‘Terror’ Charlie Turner bowling was penetrative, but lack of their batting to withstand the English professional , Bobby Peel took 11 Wicket .

          On the march 1889 in the South Africa England won the first Test at port Elizabeth by 8 wickets. In the second test for England Bobby Abel of surrey scored 120. The first century made by Bernard Tancred of South Africa, He became the first test batsman to carry his bat for 26*. 47 for all out as South Africa collapsed . At  Cape Town Johnny Briggs took 7 for 17 and  8 for 11 bowled 14 and 1 LBW.

England won the Ashes series by 2-0 in 1890 although Jack Barrett scored 67 and Australia’s 176 in the second innings at Lords Frederikck Martin took of England took 12 wicket for 102.

On the 1891-92 tour at cape Town in South Africa England won only the Test. Harry Wood and the wicket keeper Surrey made  134 not out and the Ferris who previously played for Australia he got 13 for 91.




The Ashes regained England in 1893 with an innings and also won at the oval. Other two Test were drawn. Three consecutive century were made by W G Grace and A F Stoddart the opening stands. Arthur Shrewsbury scored 106 at Lords. On the 1894-95 England led by Andrew Stoddart to a trilling 3-2 victory in Ashes tour. The final wicket took by Bobby Peel in the final Test  victory at Sydney and Melbourne in the second
