Botswana started to play cricket by the South African experience and Indian subcontinent. In 2001 they were elected as an affiliate member of the ICC. Next year they played African Cup in Zambia. In the first round they won by beating Namibia, Zambia, Tanzania and Zimbabwe and in the semi final they beat Kenya but they lost in the final against South Africa by 270 runs.
For the ICC Trophy 2005, they won African affiliates qualifying tournament in March 2004.Africa Cricket Association Championship they qualified. They defeated Nigeria and Tanzania in the tournament and Zambia in august 2004.They were promoted to associated member by the rewarded of their performance in the tournament in 2005.
They participated in World cricket league Division two of African region in 2006, ended second after Tanzania. This result qualified them in Division five of the world Cricket League.
Botswana toured to Jersey to participate in the division five tournaments. They won only one match against Bahamas, defeated three matches and one match abandoned due to rain so they could not reached in the semi final. They finished sixth after beating Germany and lost to Singapore. Botswana lost the chance to participated their further dream World Cup 2011.
The World Cricket League Division two of African region Botswana participated in October 2008. they won the tournament with out defeated. This victory reached them to Division one of the African regions.
Botswana toured to Singapore to took part in World Cricket League Division six in August 2009. They lost four and won only one group match. Their position was fifth after defeated by Norway.
The ICC World Cricket League Division Seven hosted in Botswana in May 2011. They won three matches against Norway, Japan and Germany but lost to eventual championship Kuwait. Nigeria secured second place and Germany won the match. In September 2011 ICC World Cricket League Division Six held in Malaysia , Botswana failed to remain in the Division due to lost.
