HISTORY OF SRI LANKA CRICKET


Sri Lanka  brought  cricket to the nation when it was colonized by English .As per record first cricket match was played in the country  as for back as 1832.although Sri Lankan then known as Ceylon  the first class cricket played in 1905. 1975 world cup  cricket  inaugural  that they made their international debut. They humbled here losing to West Indies by 9 Wicket . At the same tour, they turned head and show excellent  display in their match against Australia . Formerly Sri Lanka has an old civilian under  Europe .



Ceylon was re named Sri Lanka in 1972.

The first cricket was reported in Colombo journal on 5 September  1832 which knopwn as formation of cricket club. The Colombo  Cricket Club formed very soon  and began to play on November 1933 against 97th regiment.


Lvo Bligh’s team  played an odds game in November 1882 in Colombo on the way to Australia  , there they recovered ashed. English team led by George Vernon toured against Sri Lanka and India in 1888-89.Australian team played in Colombo as en route to England.

Ceylon  became first class cricket restricted to game  against  tourist teams, not only English & Australia , who used Ceylon on the long voyage to each other country in 1932-33 occasionally especially Ceylon played abroad match in India.

Ceylon cricket  Association played first class match  for Gopalan Trophy  against Madras from  1953-4 to 1975-6.. Approximately   every two ears the fixture was played in Colombo with one further fixture in 1982-3
Sri Lanka started domestic competition when 12 team competed for the Daily News Trophy in 1938. The  tournament title was P Saravanamuttu Trophy in 1950-51 and 1976-77 Robert Senanayake Trophy then Sri Lanka began test Cricket playing .



In 1982 the tournament  was rebranded  as the Lakspray  Trophy 1988-89 season for the first class. P Saravanamuttu Trophy  the title was  resurrected from 1990 and sice 1998 then it has been renamed  the Premier Trophy.

The Brown Trophy tournament was held in Sri Lanka  first limited over tournament. In 1988-89. Only four teams were competed in the competition
